Developing a Relationship with the Holy Spirit (3)

The Holy Spirit ‘With’ us:

When we think of someone being ‘with’ us it would be best if that someone was a friend. Jesus made a wonderful conditional promise about being a friend to us:

John 15:12-17 (NLT)
12
This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.
13
There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
14
You are my friends if you do what I command.
15
I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me.
16
You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.
17
This is my command: Love each other.

Wow, if only we had Jesus walking with us!

But He promised, so how does He do it?

Was it just for His disciples while He was with them?

Didn’t He say, (Matthew 28:20) “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

This is how He does it -

John 14:16 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counsellor, to be with you forever – the Spirit of Truth.”

Thisanother’ is Allo[gk] – which means of the same kind.

Not the ‘another’ used in Galatians 1:6 which is Heteros[gk] – and means of a different kind eg heterosexual.

I marvel that you are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto ‘another’ gospel. (KJV)

The Holy Spirit is a counsellor to us in the same way that Jesus was a counsellor to his disciples.

Counsellor’ is Parakletos[gk]- which means one called alongside to help. It can also mean Comforter or Consoler.

This is how Strongs Lexicon puts it:

1) summoned, called to one’s side, to one’s aid

a) one who pleads another’s cause before a judge,

b) one who pleads another’s cause, an intercessor

c) in the widest sense, a helper, succourer, assistant of the Holy Spirit destined to take the place of Christ with the apostles (after his ascension to the Father), to lead them to a deeper knowledge of the gospel truth, and give them divine strength needed to enable them to undergo trials and persecutions on behalf of the divine kingdom

John 16:13,14 “But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to Me by taking from what is Mine and making it known to you.”

How did Jesus help the disciples?

  • When they were caught in a storm

  • When Peter denied that he knew Jesus

For next time be prepared to talk about:

  • How the Holy Spirit has helped you

  • What you have learned about developing your friendship with the Holy Spirit that we could apply to our daily lives.
